At Van den Breekel, we are constantly working to improve our products and our way of working. Tens of billions of shoes are produced each year: the shoe industry is therefore an important place to make a change if we want to make the world a little greener. We realize only too well that we have a part to play in this, which is why we are always looking for ways to bring more and more sustainable shoes to market. In this blog we would like to tell you how we do that.

Replacing materials

Because, as a company, we don’t want to close our eyes in times of climate change, sustainability is at the forefront of our shoe production. First, our production methods and materials are always tested for harmful substances such as Azo, chromium VI, formaldehyde, heavy metals and other banned materials. In this way, we keep a close eye that we do not contribute to producing with polluting substances.

Sustainable

We always look for substitute sustainable options for our raw materials. For example, when we look at leather, two questions are paramount: where does the leather come from and how is it processed? More sustainable leather is tanned without heavy chemicals. Another advantage of this leather is that it is often biodegradable and therefore does not contribute to the landfill. It is a strong product, which counters a throwaway society.

Vegan

In addition to the sustainable aspect of our shoe production, we delve into the world of vegan shoes. Thanks to the use of animal-friendly materials, we burden the environment to a much lesser degree when producing with artificial leather, rubber or cork. Not only the shoe itself, but also the product packaging we include in making ecological choices. You are thus assured of a fully animal-friendly end product. At Van den Breekel we are constantly looking for new materials to produce stylish, unique and progressive vegan shoes.

Recyclable

Taking it one step further, we look at producing fully recyclable shoes. We use materials from all kinds of waste that have already had a full life and can be reused to create great shoe concepts. This does not compromise the quality, the reusable materials create unique and original concepts for long lasting shoes. Production in Europe

In addition to swapping raw materials, we also look at what is best for production and freight. The many containers that sail around the world bring a lot of emissions into the air. The closer production is to home, the shorter the distance of transporting the finished products. To keep the lines shorter, our production mostly takes place in Europe. Our partners can be found in Italy, Spain and Portugal, among others. Of course, we only work with partners who stand for good working conditions.
